The third symptom of Dissociative Identity Disorder is the fact that the person has what is called as PTSD. There are many signs for this diagnosis such as hyper vigilance, looking over one's shoulder and having smells that let you know that this was part of your abuse. Sometimes it is because you meet someone that looks so much like the abuser you become lost in your mind and extremely afraid. You may retreat to where you live so as not to have that happen again. In everyday life we come across many smells that can eventually bring up flashbacks about the trauma in our lives. Again we are flooded by so many flashbacks and the emotions that in the beginning of the trauma was not able to feel. This is why when this recollection happens it is so traumatic to us. Sometimes when watching a movie something may trigger a great flashback that makes one want to run or have such severe anxiety attacks the person can hardly breathe. And so much more in involved with sounds such as different music or songs or the sounds that were going on during the trauma and it flashes back to this episode. Many are distresses when hearing someone chew because it reminds them about the noises that came with the disgusting form of abuse put upon this person. A certain year and month can trigger these flashbacks and so many horrible triggers in the mind. I today cannot handle eating with someone who is not quiet while trying to eat, I will always feel so much rage inside and it has nothing to do with what they are doing. I live a protective life in so many ways.
